The Malacca Sultanate, Riau-Johor Sultanate, the Portuguese, Dutch and British together played important roles in the history and left behind some historical sites worth visiting. Singapore
Fort
Canning, Singapore, also known as Bukit Larangan. It is believed to be the site
of ancient palace of Parameswara, a 14th century Palembang ruler. Some believed
Parameswara was buried on Bukit Larangan. There is however, no evidence to
corroborate this.
Sultan Mosque.
Built by Sultan Hussain of Johor
and Temenggong Abdul Rahman, the Singapore island chief with the fund of the
East India Company. The construction was done after Singapore was ceded to the
British in 1819 and Raffles granted Kampung Glam to Sultan Hussain and
Temenggong Abdul Rahman for their residence. The Sultan's and Temenggong's
followers from Riau islands, Malacca and Sumatra came here to settle down.

Istana Kampong Glam. Raffles granted Temenggong Abdul Rahman and Sultan Hussain the use of Kampong Glam. Sultan Hussain built his palace there and brought his followers from Riau island and settled down here.

Bugis Street. Bugis traditionally are seafarers and pirates. They came to Riau during the dispute between the Sultan and the Regent family. During the clash with the Dutch, some Bugis came to Singapore. They brought with them the business network. The Bugis set up Kampung Bugis along the shore of Rochor River.

Bukit Cening Fort
Situated at Lingga Island, it is a remainder of old Fort from XVII century. It looks like an entrance to Daik river. In the past canons were installed on the Fort building. Together with the navy, it fought against the Dutch invasion.
Colonial Graveyard at Tanjung Pinang
It is a graveyard left behind by
the colonial ruling with sculpture on the tombstone. Unfortunately, the place is
not preserved well until part of the tombstone is broken and covered with
lalang.
Penyengat Island
This island is located not far away
from Tanjung Pinang. Sultan Mahmud Shah gave as a wedding gift, this island to
his bride, Raja Hamidah, daughter of Raja Ali Haji. Penyengat Island became a
governmental, religious and cultural centre. You may see Mesjid Raya (Grand
Mosque), 3 cannons, cemeteries etc.
