KRETA AYER MAP
KRETA AYER (CHINATOWN)
Kreta Ayer also known as Chinatown, unquestionably bears nostalgic value to Singaporean. It was the cradle of early Singapore migrants. Here is the landing point of Chinese immigrants who risk their lives to travel to Nanyang (South eas asia) across the South China Sea. The perils at the sea was much higher 100 years ago as compared to today.
Most of these immigrants worked as coolie at Boat Quay and Clarke Quay. They lived at the part of town to the south of Singapore Rvier.
Kreta Ayer (Chinatown) become the hub of business, market, restaurant, theatre, shop, worker quarter and even brothel. It was vibrant and busy then.
Many clan associations were established by the migrants to take care of their own countrymen and assist those who wished to come to Nanyang. They are the focal point of migrants to meet and discuss social issues.
Kreta Ayer nowadays is more like a tourist centre. Most of the old buildings were refurbished to maintain their original architecture.
Visitors could visit the Pagoda Street and Temple Street which are designated as the tourist spots with plenty of stalls selling a variety of goods and services.

Pagoda Street is connected to the exit of Chinatown MRT. It is designated to be tourist spot where visitors may shop. There are plenty of stall selling apparel, souvenirs, painting, herbs and even foot reflexology services. This street becomes even much busier during festive seasons like Chinese New Year.

Temple Street is another tourist spot. Compared with Pagoda Street, here no road side store is allowed. The shops sell goods and services to fellow visitors. The street is decorated with chinese lanterns.

This is a Chinese calligraphy shop selling chinese writing which is an art by itself.. Visitors may watch the master demonstrating the calligraphy or just buy the writing hanging in the stall.
