HISTORY
Stamford Raffles statute by the side of Singapore River.
Pre-World War II
Originally the island has a Javanese name i.e. Temasek (meaning 'sea town').This could be found in the Javanese Negarakretagama 1365.
The word Singapore (Singapura in Malay) means lion city. (Singa - lion; pura - city). According to the Malay Annals (Sejarah Melayu), this name was originally given by a Sumatran prince named Sang Nila Utama when he saw an auspicious beast on the shore when he landed the island. His chief minister identified the animal as lion.
Between 16th and early 19th century, Singapore island was part of Sultanate of Johor.
On 29 January 1819, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles landed on the island of Singapore after surveying a few nearby island in search for a port of call. Raffles signed a treaty with Sultan Hussein Shah.
In 1824, 2 treaties were executed which formalized Singapore status as British possession. They are
i. Anglo-Dutch Treaty in March 1924 whereby the Dutch ceded all their bases in the Malay Peninsula and India to British; in return British gave all their bases in Sumatra to Netherland. Consequently this ended the Johor-Riau Sultanate as the Sultanate was broken down to 3 parts i.e. Singapore, Malay Peninsula and the Riau Archipelago.
ii. Treaty made with Sultan Hussein and Temenggong Abdur Rahman whereby they ceded Singapore outright to the British in return for increased cash payment and pension.
In 1867, Singapore together with Malacca and Penang (the Straits Settlements) was made a British Crown colony.
World War II
On 15 February 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese. The ill-prepared British were defeated by the Japanese in 6 days. It was renamed Shonan. Since then it remained under Japanese occupation for 3 years 8 months. Thereafter, the British returned.
Post-World War II
When British came back after the World War II, it placed Singapore under the British Military Administration. On 1 April 1946, Singapore became a Crown colony.
In 1959, Singapore became a self-governing state within the British Empire. Yusof bin Ishak sworn in as Yang di-Pertuan Negara (the President) and Lee Kuan Yew as its first Prime Minister.
The Governor has constitutional power with an advisory council of officials and nominated non-officials. In 1948, Singapore has its first election.
After 1962 Merger Referendum of Singapore, joined the Federation of Malaysia in September 1963.
Singapore left the federation 2 years later and officially became an independent nation on 9 August 1965.
The new nation was admitted to the United Nations on 21 September 1965.
Singapore faced plenty of problems like unemployment, lack of housing and dearth of natural resources. The country under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew tackled the problem of unemployment, launched large-scale housing scheme and raised the standard of living.
Goh Chok Tong succeeded Lee as Prime Minister of Singapore.
In 2004, the eldest son of Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Hsien Long became the third Prime Minister of Singapore.
